PASEO FIRST FRIDAY GALLERY WALK:

Friday, February 7, 2014

6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

THE ART OF RELATIONSHIPS

In February, the month when we pay tribute to special relationships, JRB Art at The Elms will feature paintings by Rae Baldridge and the sculptural work of Jonathan Hils. For this exhibit, which opens with a reception on February 7th during The Paseo Arts District’s First Friday Gallery walk from 6:00 to 9:00pm, both artists have chosen to present work that explores oppositional relationships and tension between: representation and abstraction, attention and inattention, absence and presence, chaos and organization, light and line, and the relationship between interior and exterior spaces. The exhibit will run through Friday, February 28, 2014. Guests at the opening reception will be also be able to enjoy the romantic vocals of Oklahoma City chanteuse, Amy Robyn Young.

Rea Baldridge is a native Oklahoma artist who has worked in several disciplines and a variety of media. When experiencing the artistic sensibility of Rea, one can usually expect to be amused, challenged, or simply perplexed. Her unconventional views on the intersection of art and culture have found expression in conceptual works related to commerce, society and politics.  Baldridge’s work is not easily categorized.  She is a painter, but some of her most interesting work has been rendered without a stroke.  For the last several years, her work has centered on, in her own words, “having a conversation with the canvas and discovering images that appear, and change, and vanish, even while looking.” As always, Rea’s focus lies in the space between the canvas and the brain, where there is plenty of room to play.

A native of New Hampshire Jonathan W. Hils is an Associate Professor of sculpture at the University of Oklahoma School of Art & Art History.  He received his BFA degree from Georgia State University and his MFA from Tulane University.  Hils is the recipient of the 2005 Oklahoma Visual Arts Fellowship for outstanding creative work in the visual arts.  Hils’ work is represented in several private and corporate collections including the Hyatt Corporation, Four Seasons, the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, and Equity West Partners. Through both chaotic systemization and repetitive actions, Hils work intertwines substantial physicality with a distinctive sense of delicacy generated from fabricating small elements into larger works across varying scales. Hils has been a visiting artist and lecturer at San Jose University, the University of Wyoming, Appalachian State University, Longwood University, the College of Charleston, Renmin University (China) Wichita State University and Brevard College.

JRB Art at The Elms presents a diverse roster of emerging, established, and internationally exhibited artists who create in a wide range of media including: paintings, drawings, sculpture, ceramics, glass, fine crafts, functional objects, fiber art and photographs. This 8,000 square foot award-winning gallery in Oklahoma City’s Paseo Arts District changes its exhibits monthly in a gracious environment that fosters a dialogue between the arts and the larger community while providing quality art for first time buyers as well as individual, corporate and museum collections.

JRB Art at The Elms, the former home of Nan Sheets which was built in 1920, is located at 2810 North Walker and is open Monday through Saturday, 10-6, and Sunday 1-5.
