John Brandenburg is a Norman, Oklahoma resident and a 1963 graduate of the University of Oklahoma. He has written visual arts and theatre reviews as an arts correspondent for The Oklahoman newspaper for over 30 years. Brandenburg has painted seriously for about 35 years and has shown his work for nearly 25 years. In his most recent works Brandenburg has used a specific process of applying thin layers of color over one another with a palette knife, for which he uses tools to create scratch drawings in the wet paint. He then applies paint with brushes to complete his compositions. In this series of works Brandenburg also added depth to his paintings by layering imagery on to his work surface. His subject matter is generally semi-abstract, but finds its origin in figurative, landscape and geometric elements. Brandenburg considers his works to be a celebration of nature and the human figure.
